A home away from home.

I was meant to stay a couple of months and ended up staying one and a half turns around the sun.

A beautiful, tropical Spanish home in the middle of Singapore for expat orphans – Dan, Bee, Chev, Loki, and me.

By the summer of 2021, Dan and Bee have lived here for a while and were not planning to sublease the spare room – a typical never say never situation. A year later, our Spanish orphan home grew and we welcomed Chev into our house. With her came the end of the lockdown and more social activities, and the delicious smell of freshly baked olive oil cake. Sometimes we didn’t see each other in over a week, other times we had dinner regularly or casual catch-ups in in front of the fridge. It was that kind of dynamic where pulling tarot cards and philosophizing about life happens naturally.

In this home, I learned more about relationships. What it means to be newlyweds and true partners, how to live in a community, and how to heal from breakups. I learned how challenging it can be to start a business from scratch and what it means to be an entrepreneur.

I felt how inspiring and meaningful it can be to be in service of others and how to create a welcoming and loving space for visitors and other expat orphans.

I learned that gardening is indeed therapy and that everyone benefits from some blossoming green friends around the apartment.

I got to taste Hungarian, Greek, and Singaporean food: Palascinta (pancakes), Kotosoupa Avgolemono (greek chicken soup), and Laksa (a spicy seafood noodle soup).

And got to connect with creative, unique, and inspiring people in Singapore who dare to think outside the box. I became friends with our fluffy housemate who always cheered me up and is a true teacher of unconditional love.

I learned to love this home away from home, a truly healing space  and I am forever grateful for that.
